Researchers from the Spanish institute of Oceanography have discovered a new form of algae in the waters of Canarie Islands. These algae are toxic and have a width equal to that of a hair.
Scientists discovered that these algae dwelled in the rocky beaches of Canarie Islands. These algae are consumed by the fishes found in the waters of Canarie Islands. Though the toxics do not affect the fish that live around the Canarie Islands they release toxics on human consumption of the fish.
The toxics defy freezing and cooking processes and cause several ailments like, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, tiredness etc.
According to Santiago Fraga, a research scientist, so far there have been three such outbreaks in the Canarie Islands; in 2004, in 2008 and in 2009. However there is no cause for alarm but knowledge about the toxic releasing algae is important.
